put it on the ballot

Police union proposes income tax hike to pay for more cops - Cleveland Metro News – The Latest Breaking News, Photos and Stories from The Plain Dealer -- Kevin Conwell says he wants to gauge Mayor Jackson's and Marty Sweeney's support for this idea. Kevin, you need to represent the constituency first and foremost. Please don't forget, you, and Sweeney and Jackson, should be serving us first. We really don't see what gauging their support has to do with anything--you all work for us, and you shouldn't be deciding or second-guessing what it is you think we want. Put it on the ballot, and we'll vote, and that's how we'll let you know what you're supposed to do. You guys don't seem to be able to get it right on your own.

I wonder if we should just continue using the PutItOnTheBallot machinery? A mere 9,600 should be a piece of cake.

  1. it'll never happen. they hate the police except for when the police are politically expedient scapegoats. raise taxes for anything else? sure, but not for your protection.

  2. see, the p.d. in consecutive days has run stories condemning the police. first, the domestic abuse "problem" among police which is statistically no different than from the general public. now the use of force stats are termed to be "problematic." they don't seem "problematic" to me at all. seems that they are surprisingly low in fact. when the police ask for a levy, the PD hammers them. but if it is for the schools or the money changers (same thing) then they run positive stories. i knew it was coming.

  3. But "they" work for us, right? How can this be, these terrible things you imply?!

  4. well you'll remember the PD lined up for the last attempt to pass a school levy in august of 2005. so did the sun newspapers and all the local t.v. media and radio. they all lied about the improvements that had reportedly been made in the schools. 46 million dollars was needed to keep the momentum going. the people didn't buy it (they knew better) and the levy went down in flames. then the truth came out about all the lies that Byrd-bennett with the help of the pd had been telling about the "progress" that had been made. same thing with the Convention Center. But when it comes to Police, they put the hammer on it right away. Strange place we live in. Do they work for us? no, they work for themselves, their funding sources (the puppeteers), and their political cronies.

  5. Things have not been more ripe for change, from my point of view, since 1967.

  6. you'd think the law of averages would prevail at some point. we haven't had a good mayor (stokes wasn't) since the 60s. its been all downhill. it is striking that a real change agent cannot organize a campaign and win. i think the dems are so entrenched in practically every office in every building in the city that the prospect of defeating even one of them is so daunting that it prevents many candidates from even making a reasonable effort at being a catalyst for change by running a top notch, well financed, campaign with spirited volunteers. i thought jim draper (a democrat) had a chance in the last mayoral, but for some reason people preferred campbell and jackson over him. he was the guy that would have restored some sanity to this circus, but once again the best candidate (my opinion) gets defeated.
